Northern Nevada has genuinely hard water. When sprinkler overspray, a leaking rain gutter, or run-off hits a window and dries in the sun, the water evaporates and the dissolved calcium and magnesium stay behind. Do that a few hundred times and you get the chalky white spotting you cannot wash off, because it is no longer sitting on the glass. It has bonded to it.
Left long enough, mineral deposits etch into the surface and the damage becomes permanent. The good news is that most of the glass we are called out to look at is not there yet. How glass gets to this point
Sprinkler overspray
By far the most common cause we see. A single misaimed head hitting a window twice a day will visibly etch that pane within a couple of seasons.
Run-off from a failing gutter
Water spilling over a clogged gutter runs down the wall and across the window below it, carrying minerals and roof grit with it every time it rains.
Sun bakes it in
High-desert sun evaporates water fast and drives the mineral bond harder. The same spotting in a cooler, shadier climate would come off far more easily.
Waiting makes it permanent
Early-stage deposits sit on the surface and come off. Late-stage deposits eat into it. This is one of the few cleaning problems that has a real deadline.

Can all hard water stains be removed?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Surface deposits come off well. Once minerals have etched into the glass itself, the damage is physical and permanent. We test first so you know which one you are dealing with before you spend anything.
Will the treatment scratch or damage my windows?
Not when it is done correctly. We use compounds formulated for glass, we test first, and we take extra care with tempered and coated panes, which are less forgiving. This is exactly why it is worth having someone do it who has done it before.
How do I stop it coming back?
Fix what is putting water on the glass. Nine times out of ten it is a sprinkler head that needs turning a few degrees. We will show you the culprit while we are there.
Is this the same as regular window cleaning?
No. Regular cleaning removes what is sitting on the glass. Hard water restoration removes what has bonded to it. It is slower, it uses different products, and it is priced separately.
